Manitoba Harvest Hemp Heart Bites Giveaway + WIAW

1 July, 2015 by Giselle Rochford 27 Comments

Disclaimer: I received a complementary package of Hemp Hearts from Manitoba Harvest in exchange for an honest review. As always, all opinions are my own.

It’s Wednesday again, which means it’s time for another look at what I’ve been eating recently. This week, I’m linking up with Jenn and friends for WIAW to share a full day of eats, plus a chance to win a free bag of Manitoba Harvest Hemp Heart Bites.

Manitoba Harvest Hemp Heart Bites (healthy, vegan, protein filled snack) Review and Giveaway (ends July 8, 2015) via @ExSloth | ExSloth

Details on the giveaway, as well as my thoughts on the Hemp Heart Bites, are near the end of the post, but first, here’s a look at other things I’ve been noshing on recently.

[Tweet “Thoughts on @ManitobaHarvest Hemp Heart Bites + a #giveaway #fuelledbyhemp”]

Breakfast: Coconut Bake

One of my roommates, Deanna, has been blowing it up in the kitchen recently, making a Trinidadian/Caribbean classic: Coconut Bake. It’s kind of hard to describe if you haven’t had it before, but it’s basically a circular ‘loaf’ of bread made with coconut milk and shredded coconut. We’ve been enjoying it with saltfish buljol, another Trini favourite, but I totally eat it on it’s own as well.

Lunch 1: Pizza

Ground beef was on sale again this week so, of course, I had to snap it up. This time, instead of serving it with roasted veggies, I made ‘pizza’. I’d picked up some whole wheat pitas at the grocery as well, so I spread some homemade pizza sauce on a couple, topped with ground beef, spinach, shallots, bell peppers and nutritional yeast, and devoured in o.o5 seconds. So good.

Snacks 1 & 2: Granola & Cookies

On this particular day, I went Guelph to visit some friends, so I packed some snacks for the trip. I made some granola, not pictured, using the recipe for my Coconut Almond Granola as a base and adding in a few extra touches. No matter how often I make this, I can never get enough, and I happily munched on it during the 30 minute drive to Guelph.

Snack number two was actually one we picked up in Guelph, from a Natural Food Market called Goodness Me!. We went in to browse, but I spied some vegan cookies that I just had to try. We got two kinds, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip and Cranberry Oatmeal. Both were good, though I preferred the chocolate chips ones. Either way, I definitely want to visit Goodness Me! again in the near future.

Lunch 2: Burrito

We were hungry again by 4pm, so we grabbed a late lunch/early dinner at Freshii in the same plaza as the market. I’d never been to Freshii before since the one in Waterloo isn’t actually open yet, but had heard good things. I had the Baja Burrito with Chicken and it was a winner, despite a little too much onion. Nevertheless, Freshii in Waterloo is going to be seeing a lot of me once they officially open their doors.

Snack 3: Hemp Heart Bites

Since I had lunch so late I wasn’t really up for dinner so I just had some snacks while the others went out for all you can eat sushi. I had more cookies and granola and finally whipped out the Manitoba Harvest Hemp Heart Bites that I’d forgotten about on the drive to Guelph.

I have to admit that I was hoping for something salty to offset the other sweet snacks, but I definitely wasn’t disappointed with what I actually got. Here are some of the highlights of the Hemp Heart Bites for me:

  • Ingredient List: They’re made with only Hemp Hearts, evaporated cane sugar, brown rice syrup, vanilla and sea salt.
  • Nutrition: They have 10g of protein per serving, and since hemp seeds are a complete protein, these babies would make a perfect post workout snack, even for vegans and vegetarians.
  • Taste & Satisfaction: These little snacks have the most satisfying crunch ever, and although they were sweet, is wasn’t overwhelming by any means. And, to top it all off, they filled me up without me having to plough through the entire bag. Can you say ‘#winning’?

It’s a funny coincidence you’d mention hemp snacks just now. My brother picked up hemp seeds for the first time – this may or may not have been my completely unselfish recommendation 😉 – and I snagged a little baggie to try myself. Unfortunately, it’s not a large amount at all so I can’t do any real recipe experimentation but I might pick up some myself soon. I like their crunchiness, though.

Not going to lie the last two weeks of eats have NOT been as healthy as they regularly are–having family in town and then my hubby having surgery (plus some pre-surgery dates) has kind of pushed convenience to the forefront. 😛

I’m always hesitant about hemp. The allergy skin test I had years ago showed I was allergic. I’ve had a few things with hemp seeds without any reaction so I assume it was only the plant.
