Getting out of a Food Rut

18 February, 2015 by Giselle Rochford 18 Comments

Hey Friends! How’s it goin?

At the end of last year I found myself in a food rut that I’ve been steadily trying to work my way out of since the year began. That means trying and cooking lots of new to me things. Not all of this stuff makes it on to the blog so today I thought I’d share what’s been happening in my behind the scenes food world.

I’m going to be posting more in real life food photos on Instagram, so if you’re interested you can follow me here. Until then, here’s a look into what I’ve been eating lately.

What I Ate Wednesday: Food Rut Edition

Getting out of a food rut can be hard so here are 8 healthy food ideas to spice up your meals this month @ExSloth

1. Crockpot shredded chicken soup

Chicken Soup

Back in the middle of January, I turned on my Crock Pot for the first time and decided to give one of these Slow Cooker recipes I shared last year. I was actually aiming for shredded chicken but I added wayyyy too much liquid. So, I added in some extras and soup it was. Although I make soup fairly regularly in the fall/winter I usually gravitate to old favourites like this Mexican butternut squash soup. So it was nice to have something different for a change.

2. Homemade Marinara

Homemade Marinara Sauce

I’ve been obsessed with making my own pasta (and pizza) sauce since I realised that most of my old favourites had some sort of cheese in them. I considered just switching to the plain marinara sauce at the grocery but those jars of sauce don’t last long in my apartment and the good stuff is pretty expensive. So I started making my own. I haven’t got the sauce exactly right yet, but as soon as I do, I’ll be sharing the recipe with ya!

3. Snapea Crisps

Snapea Crisps

I made the mistake of walking through the aisles on my last trip to the grocery store and I ended up with a bag of Snapea Crips. I got the black pepper flavour because the only other one I saw had dairy. It’s basically flavoured baked green peas and they were soooo good. I’ve added them to my to make list and it needs to happen ASAP. I’ll keep ya posted.

4. Popcorn

These Sweet and Salty Popcorn Bars chewy, flavourful and full of fibre- exactly what you've been waiting on to spice up your popcorn on movie nights.

Ever since I went ham on my parents’ air popper popcorn machine and made these Sweet & Salty popcorn bars, I’ve been craving popcorn like crazy. Of course, I don’t have one of those fancy machines so I’ve had to make do with stove top popcorn. I still haven’t mastered the art of stove top popcorn but it’s doing the trick right now as far as satisfying my craving goes. So it’s all good.

5. Granola & Chickpeas with milk

Coconut Almond Granola and Honey Roasted Chickpeas with Milk

Weird right? I made this batch of Coconut Almond Granola and these Honey Roasted Chickpeas at the same time and when I started running out of granola it seemed totally natural to add in some of the roasted chickpeas to top of my breakfast. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but the reality was amazeballs. You need this combo in your life.

6. Raw Vegan Blueberry Lavender Tarts

Raw Vegan Blueberry Lavender Tarts | Unbaked Cake Co.

On Sunday I met up with some awesome Toronto bloggers for a workout at Barre3 Toronto. The workout was way challenging and totally sparked an idea for a fitness related post, but the goodies we got after was the real highlight in my mind. One of the sponsors of the meet up was Unbaked Cake Co. and they sent over some unreal raw vegan desserts. I’ll admit upfront that I only grabbed this one because it was purple. I actually had no idea what was in it, but it was love at first bite. If you’re in the GTA you need to check out these snacks now. #foodieheaven

7. Raspberries and Cream Breakfast Cake

berries and cream breakfast cake

One of my friends is on an AIP diet to try to figure out some stomach issues and she’s been experimenting hard in the kitchen. She’s made a few things over the last couple weeks that I’ve really enjoyed, but this breakfast cake took the cake (pun not intended). We actually had it with blueberries, but the original recipe calls for raspberries and can be found here. Try it. You will not be disappointed.

8. Gluten & Dairy Free Lentil Pancake Loaf

Lentil Pancake Loaf4

This list could not be complete without including the lasted recipe to come out of the ExSloth kitchen. I can’t even articulate how much I love this lentil pancake loaf. It was my first time experimenting with buckwheat flour and deliberate gluten free baking and I have to say that it was a success. Hopefully I’ll continue with this trend and not have more things to add to my list of recipe fails. #fingerscrossed

I’ve been trying to break out of some food ruts lately. I’ve been eating toast and baked sweet potato fries with guacamole religiously. I definitely want to give roasted chickpeas + granola a go! I’m all about textures so that’d be a nice extra crunch and a pop of protein!!

I definitely feel ya on the ruts, girl. It can be -so- easy to fall into them… especially when you’re constantly recipe testing for the blog and the last thing you want to do is meal plan on top of that. I actually reached a point where I was eating potatoes for dinner so often that I’m pretty sure they were giving me headaches. Oops 😆 And I keep meaning to try those snapea crisps, but I hear they’re crazy addicting, and I’m not sure I could handle another addiction 😆

Seriously those raw bites are making my mouth water!! They are beautiful. I need them in my life!!
When I’m in a food rut I really sit down and meal plan. If I end up in a rut it’s usually because I haven’t been planning my meals and I go on autopilot when I cook/look in the fridge/grocery shop.

I’ve fallen into a sugar rut lately, as in I’ve had way too much and now crave sweets all day. It sucks. And so far I am listening to my cravings… =( I need to change that up! I think just getting rid of the extra candy in my house would be a great place to start. I’m all about popcorn though so I feel ya on that.

The chickpeas in your granola look really good– what a creative way to boost the protein of some cereal 🙂

I love Snapea Crisps and popcorn on the stove top isn’t tough if you just remember to shake the pot often and open the lid several times while cooking to release the steam. 🙂

I love this post. What a fantastic idea. It is super easy to get caught up in food ruts, and this reminds us to shake free of them from time to time and gives us options too. Like popcorn, I need more popcorn in my life.

That being said, I’m moderating the WIAW link up for Jenn today and while this is a wonderful post, it doesn’t really stay to true to the idea of the link up, which is sharing a full day of food. As such it won’t be included in the link up party. I hope you understand and have a great day. .

All of those look really good! I just started making my own spaghetti and pizza sauce. So much cheaper, and very easy to make and freeze. =)
