Hey Friends! How’s it goin?
I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but I haven’t posted a recipe around here since this Ginger-Spiced Carrot Bread before Easter. My brain is actually full of ideas but finals start on Saturday and most of my time is spent studying. I’m most productive during the daylight hours, which just happens to be the best picture taking time. Plus, the weather has been rainy and overcast here in Waterloo for the last week, so natural lighting is kind of a joke right now.
So, today, I have another non-recipe post for you. I got the idea for this a recently on Rebecca’s blog and then Nicole joined the party earlier this week. They called it the ‘Which foods must go’ challenge. But, since I’m a rebel, and I’m no stranger to Food Fights, I decided to call it like it is.
[Tweet “Are you a #foodie? Weigh in on the Ultimate Food Fight Challenge now!”]
Here’s how it works: You’re given three pretty epic foods and you have to decide which one you can give up for the rest of your life. I recommend taking this challenge while sipping some wine with a few foodies. The inevitable debates will probably be the most fun you have all day.
1. Pancakes, Waffles or French Toast
This shouldn’t be a surprise if you’ve been around for a while, but because breakfast foods are my favourite. So this one was a tough one. Even though my pancake flipping game leaves a lot to be desired, I love them. And french toast is just so darned easy to make that there’s no way I could remove them from my repertoire. To top it all off, I don’t have a waffle maker so I’ve never actually made them before. So, waffles ended up getting the shaft.
2. Pie, Cake or Brownies
Pie didn’t make the cut with this one. You know how I feel about brownies. Hell, I made myself birthday brownies instead of birthday cake last year. And although I have yet to actually make one, other than my failed attempts as a child, cakes are still one of my top 5 desserts. Since sweet pies, like pumpkin and apple, aren’t really a big thing in Trinidad, and I didn’t have either until I moved to Canada in 2010, it wasn’t really a hard decision to make anyway.
3. Curly fries, crinkle cut fries or steak fries
What would you say if I told you I had to Google these? Fries were pretty much just fries in my universe, up until last night. But you can now consider me suitably schooled in the different variations. I love a good portion of steak fries, especially when I’m having a burger. So crisp and perfectly salted. Crinkle cut fries are great with barbecue chicken and coleslaw. Don’t ask me why. They just are. So, by process of elimination, there’s no room for curly fries in my life. Them’s the breaks.
4. Pizza, Pizza Rolls or Bagel Bites
The only thing I’ve had on this list is the pizza. And even that I have to be picky about these days since cheese is out for me. Either way, pizza rolls and bagel bites will probably never happen. So pizza it is.
5. Mozzarella Sticks, Onion Rings or Potato Skins
Mozzarella sticks are out just by the fact that they’re made of cheese and would lead to all.the.stomach.pains. But onion rings are pretty gross in my opinion. So potato skins are the only things on this list that I’d actually eat. Not that I even remember the last time I did…
6. Chocolate Chip Cookies, Sugar Cookies or Peanut Butter Cookies
I love peanut butter cookies, I really do. But I’ve made chocolate chip cookies three times this week already, so it’s clear how I feel about those. And my roommate made Christmas sugar cookies last week and we pretty much devoured them in one sitting. However, I haven’t had peanut butter cookies in almost a year, and I can’t say that I’ve missed them too much. So, buh-bye.
7. Burritos, Quesadillas or Tacos
At one point in time, I’d probably have been stumped my this one. But, for once, my dairy-free life is good for something other than avoiding sleepless nights filled with stomach pains. It’s not the same, but you can omit the cheese from burritos and tacos. So…adios quesadillas.
8. Bacon, Sausage or Ham
I’m not a huge fan of bacon. Turkey bacon, yes. I love to wrap it around things apparently. Turkey bacon wrapped asparagus or inside out loaded potato poppers anyone? Sausage is my runner up to turkey bacon when it comes to breakfast meat. But only chicken/turkey franks. I’m not big on actual breakfast sausage. And ham is an old favourite, especially around Christmas time. So, if I had to choose, I get rid of regular bacon. But if turkey bacon was in the running, ham would be the biggest loser in this game.
9. Barbecue Ribs, Hot Wings or Burger Sliders
Hot wings are gonna have to go here. I have never been a fan of wings. Wing nights at the local bar are not my thing. If they have chicken tenders nights, I’m down. But Monday night wings is just another reason for me to stay home and save money. But, I’ve had burgers for lunch/dinner more than once this week. And barbecue ribs? One (hyphenated, made up) word: mouth-gasmic.
10. Buttermilk biscuits, cornbread or dinner rolls
Regular buttermilk biscuits are obviously out, but maple ‘buttermilk’ biscuits are fair game. And dinner rolls, though no longer a staple in my diet, are still something I enjoy on occasion. Cornbread though? I could do without.
I’m gonna stop here cuz this post is getting way too long and it’s wayyy past my bedtime. But, hope you had fun getting to know the inner workings of my mind when it comes to food!

French Toast – best done stuffed.
Pie – especially pear!
Curly Fries – arby’s are the best.
Pizza – because I haven’t tried the other options…
Mozzarella Sticks!! – the homemade kind.
Sugar Cookies – though lemon cookies are really high up there for me.
Quesadillas – delicious!!
Sausage – it all has to be cooked at home. I hate the stuff made in restaurants.
Ribs – especially made by my brother-in-law
Buttermilk biscuits – super awesome homemade!!
This was fun!

Funny how everyone has their things that they’d give up and those they’d never let out of sight.
Ham, wings, and potato skins can exit stage right…

Not big breakfast person, so those aren’t an issue. Love waffle fries. Love anything with bacon. Chocolate chip cookies or brownies–that’s a toss up!
You’re killing me with all these choices!

I’m gluten/dairy/egg/red meat-free, but I’m still choosing some of these based on what I once loved. I don’t think you have to omit anything because of the dairy thing since there are SO many recipes and products out there that can do the dirty work and bring back such wonders! Okay, enough of the salesman speech, here’s my picks:
Waffles
Brownies
CURLY FRIES
Pizza
Mozzarella Sticks
Choco Chip Cookies
Burritos
Sausage (although, I really don’t like any of these honestly….)
RIBS RIBS RIBS
Biscuits!
Shit, I did the ones that I’d KEEP. Whoops. Directions were never my strong suit.
Definitely pancakes, I could eat them every day, plain with butter, topped with fruit. Yum! My favorite!
